War of words over biotechnology wears on
Testing for one bean in a thousand

December 5, 2001 -- Neogen Corporation claims that its new test kit can detect as little as one Roundup Ready soybean among 1,000 soybeans, or one Roundup Ready NK603 corn kernel among 800
kernels. Positive samples can usually be read within five minutes on the test's device.

The Agri-Screen for CP4 Strip Test is Neogen's fourth test kit for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and one of 20 test kits
designed especially for grain-based industries. CP4 is an abbreviation for the protein added to crops to make them tolerant to glyphosate herbicides.

"While overwhelming evidence exists that Roundup Ready products pose no known risk to food safety, a number of domestic processors and large importers, such as China, require
the identification of all genetically modified foods," says James Herbert, Neogen's president. "We are pleased to
provide a solution that will make those identifications quick, simple and accurate."
