New crops vault in value
Coaxing more value from canola

March 9, 2000 -- Cenex Harvest States, the second-largest producer-owned cooperative in the United States, is piloting a program
designed to meet highly specialized grain buyer specifications with a guaranteed production protocol from seed selection through delivery. Dubbed
MVP for "More Value Produced," the program seeks to stamp the same image of
value on its process that the MVP title stamps on an American ball player.

Cenex Harvest States' pilot project for MVP involves certifying the
production and delivery of a canola crop low in linoleic acid. This specialty oilseed
has a bottom-line advantage for the commercial food industry as a processed
cooking oil that maintains a "fry life" of up to 30 percent longer than other oils.
The pilot already has a commercial food processor/distributor with a need for
20,000 to 30,000 acres of low-linoleic-acid canola.

Producers may realize a profit of $3 to $5 per acre from participating in the
MVP canola program.
