Archeologists believe they may have discovered the cave of the biblical John the Baptist in Israel.

According to The Associated Press, which was given an exclusive tour of the cave, it is lined with wall engravings that tell the story of the New Testament figure. There are 28 steps that lead down to a huge pool of water. Also, there is a stone in the cave archeologists believe was used for ceremonial foot-washing.

In the Bible, John used the cave to anoint many of his disciples.

"John the Baptist, who was just a figure from the Gospels, now comes to life," said British archaeologist Shimon Gibson, who supervised the dig outside Jerusalem.

Others, however, say there is no proof John ever set foot inside the cave, which is 2.5 miles from Ein Kerem, his home, which is now part of Jerusalem.

John is one of the most important figures in Christianity. A devout contemporary of Jesus, he preached a message of redemption.
