SPEED World Touring Car Championship
Paul Bonaccorsi of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, raced his No. 40 Protege to Mazda's highest SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship finish ever, crossing the line second June 30, 2002, at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Lexington, OH. The weekend was a benchmark for Mazda as it led all manufacturers with five top 10 finishes. The closest competition came from industry heavyweight BMW, which finished with two cars in the top 10. Will Turner, of Newburyport, MA, ended a three-year win drought,taking first place in his BMW 325i. Bonaccorsi and Taz Harvey, of Danville, CA,driving a Honda Civic Si, completed the top three.
