Summer Starts With Rain Aplenty, Storms Too Storms have caused some massive damage across the Midwest and South in last weeks of Spring, turning to Summer. Crops are moving at fast clip as heat units build and crops spurt. Corn is on track as we drive the rural American highways and backroads, and soybeans are jumping up the pant legs as fireworks stands dot the edges of towns. Summer events are unfolding, with each town trying to outdo the other, often holding nearby events simultaneously. Car shows are kicking off as the large "rod show" at St. Paul Minnesota Fairgrounds comes to an end, with more than 10,000 vintage custom cars heading back to their homes near and far. As these cars gathered deadly storms swirled around the state, and surrounding states of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Dakotas, even Montana. While the southern states and lower Midwest are frequently hit by violent late summer storms, many meteoroligists are suggesting stronger summer storms in store. The "El Ninio Effect" of warmer South American west coastal waters do more to generate our weather than we estimate. The giant thermals warm and move air above that tilts the usual patterns of western air temperatures, and west to east flow patterns are often disrupted, and differentials of temperatures at altitude drive stronger "systems" of lows and highs. Like all pilots, this editor spends more than a little time as weather observor and amatueur meteorologist. No training can prepare you for all the eventualities, but flying has become more complex as regulations change. |
